Adolf Johann Höffler, Italian Landscape with Travellers Crossing an Arched Bridge - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
For Sale by Brave Fine Art
Description

This mid-19th-century landscape by German artist Adolf Johann Höffler (1825-1898) depicts travellers crossing an old stone bridge within a rugged Italian valley. Höffler was a well-travelled painter whose search for subjects took him across Europe, North America and Cuba. Italy held a particular fascination.

Here, a mountain stream tumbles towards us through a rocky gorge, passing beneath a single-arched bridge before breaking around the boulders in the foreground. Beyond, weathered buildings cluster beside a small cascade, while high above them an isolated tower rises from a distant ridge.

The precise location is unknown, although the landscape is suggestive of the countryside around Tivoli. Höffler is known to have worked there, and a drawing inscribed 'Tivoli' survives at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

The rocky gorge, rushing water, cascade, old bridge and buildings gathered closely around the river are also characteristic of the Aniene landscape surrounding the town.

There's plenty of life here. Two donkeys cross the bridge, accompanied by a traveller, with one of the animals apparently carrying baggage. Chickens wander among the buildings on the opposite bank. And, tucked beneath a vine at an upper opening on the right, a woman appears to be holding a small child. It's barely more than a few touches of paint, yet the woman's blue clothing stands out against the warm masonry while the pale child stretches an arm outwards. There's something distinctly Madonna-like about their silhouette - perhaps a tiny echo of one of Italian art's most familiar images.

During conservation, the painting was cleaned to reveal the freshness of Höffler's colouring. Brilliant flashes of blue-white describe sunlight catching the moving water, while touches of emerald, yellow and russet enliven the vegetation growing between the rocks. The warm ochres and terracottas of the buildings contrast beautifully with the cooler, hazier tones of the distant valley.

Signed in the lower right and held within a gilt frame.

This mid-nineteenth-century oil painting on canvas by Adolf Johann Höffler depicts an Italian river landscape within a rugged valley. The scene shows travellers crossing a single-arched stone bridge over a mountain stream that tumbles through a rocky gorge towards the foreground. Weathered stone buildings cluster beside a cascade on the opposite bank, and an isolated tower rises on a distant ridge. The composition includes donkeys crossing the bridge, chickens near the buildings, and a woman holding a child by an upper opening. The palette employs warm ochres, terracottas, emerald, yellow, russet, and blue-white flashes for sunlight on the moving water. The artwork is signed in the lower right and housed within a moulded gilt frame featuring beaded detailing. The overall dimensions measure 65 cm high, 83 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Conservation work includes canvas relining, cleaning, and revarnishing, revealing stable paint with fine craquelure. The frame remains in excellent condition. This piece is suited for display above a mantel in a traditional living room, study, or hallway interior setting.

Italianate landscape paintings typically depict rural Italian scenery, incorporating classical architecture, rustic stone bridges, river valleys, and natural light effects popularised by European Grand Tour painters throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Paintings from this era were executed using natural pigments ground in drying oils, applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, and housed in carved timber frames finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic paintings usually exhibit natural craquelure across the paint surface, hand-cut wooden stretcher bars, age-appropriate oxidisation on the canvas backing, and evidence of hand-carved or moulded gesso on the gilded frame.

A gilt-framed landscape painting can be hung above a simple modern sideboard or mantelpiece to create visual contrast between traditional decorative arts and clean contemporary architectural lines.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners on both the canvas and gilded frame surfaces.
