Francesco Bergamini (Active 1880 - 1915)

Francesco Bergamini was an Italian artist who specialized in interior genre and religious scenes, as well as the occasional commission for a portrait or fresco. He received his formal training at the Academy in Carrare under the direction of Giuseppe Diotti (1779 – 1846) - an artist who specialized in religious and historical scenes as well as portraiture and frescos.

The Altar Boy's Sermon is a mature example of Bergamini’s works and not only displays his strong academic training, but beautifully illustrates the influence of the French Impressionists were having on not only him, but on many artists of the period. His figures are anatomically correct, but are created with a looser brush stroke and colourful palette.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century Italian genre painting focuses on realistic depictions of everyday life, rural customs, and narrative domestic or social gatherings. Artists emphasised theatrical lighting, expressive character interaction, and historical or regional costume details.

Paintings from this era were created using oil pigments bound with linseed or walnut oil on woven linen canvas. The canvases were stretched over wooden keys and frequently framed in carved timber coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf.

Authenticity is evaluated through artist signatures, period-correct craquelure patterns across the paint film, natural oxidisation of the canvas backing, and construction evidence on the wooden stretcher frames.

A substantial gilt-framed oil painting functions effectively as a dramatic focal point when positioned above a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Positioning art against rich neutral or dark wall paint creates contrast that enhances both the canvas colours and the gilded frame.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and areas with high humidity fluctuations. Frames should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, while canvas cleaning and varnish treatment should be handled exclusively by professional art conservators.
