Fred Yates Oil on Board of a Side Tank Steam Locomotive

Later than 1960
Description

K&ESR Locomotive Artist: Fred Yates (1922–2008)

Oil on panel Signed lower right Fred Yates

Dated 1970.

A side-tank steam locomotive of the Kent & East Sussex Railway, painted in oil on panel by Fred Yates.

The engine is seen close to, standing on the rails, its red buffer beam and black boiler set against a pale, almost empty yard.

Fred Yates’s K&ESR Locomotive is an oil on panel of a small side-tank engine at rest.

The locomotive fills the picture, seen in three-quarter view from the front left: a tall black chimney and smokebox, a vermilion buffer beam, cream-grey tanks lettered K&ESR, and a cab with a single round spectacle window.

Coupling rods and driving wheels are drawn in with a few dark, confident strokes. Behind it, the yard is barely stated a suggestion of sheds and a distant stack to the left, a washed grey-cream sky, and the rails running off to the right.

The handling is typical of Yates in its directness.

Paint is laid thinly in places so the panel shows through, and more thickly where the boiler, tanks and wheels need weight.

The palette is unusually restrained for an artist better known for the high colour of his Cornish and French street scenes: black, buff, red and a range of greys, with the red buffer.

Frederick Joseph Yates (1922–2008) was born in Urmston, Lancashire, served with the Grenadier Guards in the Second World War, and taught art before becoming a full-time painter in the late 1960s, working in Cornwall and later in France.

Early on he looked to L. S. Lowry; what he kept was an interest in ordinary places and working life, rendered with a naïve, expressive touch.

Railway subjects appear only occasionally in his work.

Here the machine itself stands in for the life of the line the Kent & East Sussex Railway, the light railway between Roberts Bridge and Head Corn that survives today as a heritage line based at Tenterden.

Dimensions are 61.7cm wide 45.7cm high and 3.5cm deep.

Picture size 49.4cm x 33.9cm.

Delivery within the Uk is included in the asking Price.

This British Naive Art oil on board painting depicts a dark grey and red side tank steam locomotive sitting on railway tracks, hand-signed by Fred Yates in the lower right corner. Dated 1970 and falling into the period later than 1960, the work features an impasto texture and an industrial motif rendered in a restrained palette of black, buff, red, and greys, presented in a light wooden frame with a wide white mount. The picture captures the locomotive close to in three-quarter view, complete with a tall black chimney, vermilion buffer beam, cream-grey tanks lettered K&ESR, and a cab with a single round spectacle window. Well-suited for an industrial loft interior, the artwork functions best when displayed above a sideboard. The overall dimensions measure 61.7 cm wide, 45.7 cm high, and 3.5 cm deep, while the visible picture size measures 49.4 cm by 33.9 cm.

British Naive art of the mid-twentieth century is recognised by its direct, unfiltered perspective, heavy impasto texture, and focus on everyday working-class life and industrial infrastructure such as railways and factories.

Artists during this era frequently applied thick layers of oil paint directly onto masonite or hardboard panels using palette knives and stiff brushes to create raised, three-dimensional surfaces.

Authentication involves examining the artists signature, inspecting the board and frame for period-appropriate aging, and verifying the distinctive palette knife technique and heavy impasto application typical of the painter.

Hang industrial artwork above a sideboard or console table against neutral, muted wall shades to let the textured brushwork and deep tonal palette draw visual attention.

Dust the surface lightly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid snagging raised impasto edges, and display the painting away from direct sunlight, dampness, or extreme humidity fluctuations.
