Portrait of Lady Hannah Cowper Attributed to Anna Tonelli Circa 1785

18th century
Description

Pastel on paper; held in period frame

Framed: 45 x 39 cm (17 ¾ x 15 ¼ in)

Image Size: 33 x 26 cm (13 x 10 ¼ in)

Provenance: English Private Collection

Lady Hannah Cowper (1758-1826) was the youngest daughter of Charles Gore, a wealthy English artist and traveller. She grew up largely in Italy, where her father frequented expatriate social circles. In June 1775, she married the 3rd Earl Cowper in Florence. Her husband was a prominent and incredibly wealthy British art collector and patron who preferred living a lavish life in Tuscany over returning to his estates in England and together they lived at the Villa Palmieri in Fiesole, overlooking Florence.

Resident in Florence from 1774 Hugh Douglas Hamilton is known to have drawn his pastel portrait of her in 1784. Notwithstanding her marriage to Earl Cooper in 1775, she was an object of fascination for many male visitors to the city and the pastel makes the most of her considerable physical allure. A fellow British tourist, Thomas Brand, wrote in 1784 ‘she is the most beautiful woman I ever saw’. Amongst her other dalliances, Lady Cooper famously conducted a tumultuous affair with the poet Robert Merry around the time she sat for the portrait and Brand later attested that the pastel was considered such a success that it was copied by Anna Tonelli possibly more than once. This portrait is possibly one of those copies that she undertook at the time.

Anna Tonelli née Nistri was a portraitist in pastel and watercolour in the late 18th century and early 19th century primarily in Florence and London. At some stage before 1785 she married the violinist Luigi Tonelli, a noted virtuoso. Her works are relatively scarce and are still being discovered. For many years her pastel portraits have been confused with that of Hugh Douglas Hamilton whose pupil she was.

This 18th-century Georgian portrait painting depicts Lady Hannah Cowper in pastel on paper, attributed to Anna Tonelli and dated circa 1785. The sitter wears a white dress with a blue sash and a yellow headpiece, leaning against a dark green book within a dark blue background. The oval sight edge is set inside a rectangular gilt wood frame featuring corner rosettes, beaded moulding and a gold finish. The dimensions of the piece are 45 cm high, 39 cm wide and 4 cm deep. In a modern interior, this artwork suits placement above the mantel in a drawing room or study, contributing an authentic English country house aesthetic. The composition brings historical character to traditional schemes, pairing well with period furniture, neutral walls and classic architectural details. The gilt surface reflects natural light, while the soft palette of blue, white and yellow integrates easily into existing decorative schemes.

Late 18th-century Georgian portraiture often reflects Neoclassical influences, displaying subjects in soft, flowing drapery, classical turbans, or simple sashes. Compositions frequently emphasised naturalistic poses, gentle lighting, and restrained elegance inspired by Greco-Roman aesthetics.

Portraits from this era were typically executed in oils or pastels on canvas, panel, or paper. Frames were carved from timber and coated with gesso before being finished with water gilding using fine leaf gold.

Authentic period works show age-appropriate craquelure or pastel settling, hand-carved wooden framing with natural oxidisation, period-correct sitter attire, and original canvas stretching techniques or paper mounting.

A Georgian portrait functions as a focal point when hung above a mantelpiece, placed on a gallery wall alongside varied artwork, or set atop a traditional sideboard to add historic character to modern room schemes.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve historic water gilding.
