Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A toilet mirror, also known as a dressing glass, is a free-standing mirror designed to sit atop a dressing table, chest of drawers, or vanity unit. Originating in the late 17th century and reaching peak popularity during the Georgian and Regency eras, these mirrors feature a tilting glass framed in timber supported by side posts, frequently set above a box plinth containing drawers for jewellery and grooming items.

Early 19th-century dressing glasses were predominantly constructed from solid and veneered hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. The assemblies feature silvered mirror glass, brass pivot hardware, turned finials, and hand-dovetailed drawers fitted with small brass knobs or escutcheons.

Authentic early 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, hand-planed timber backboards, and period-correct brass hardware with slight variations from hand-casting. The original glass may exhibit light foxing or subtle surface distortion, while the mahogany surface displays natural patination and gradual timber oxidisation.

Position the mirror on top of a chest of drawers, a hallway console table, or a vanity desk to establish a clear focal point. Complement the piece with contemporary ceramic vessels, modern lighting, or framed artwork to create a balanced contrast between historic mahogany and modern design elements.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a coat of beeswax polish annually, buffing gently in line with the wood grain. Avoid spraying liquid glass cleaner directly onto the mirror face, as moisture penetration along the frame edges can degrade the silver backing and wood polish.
