This fine antique Persian Malayer rug dates from 1890 and is hand-knotted from wool and cotton. The design incorporates an ivory ground with a central stepped medallion, stylized lion and peacock motifs, stepped spandrels, and a detailed floral border pattern in shades of terracotta, pale blue, pink, and dark brown. The piece displays an even low pile, minimal touches of restoration, and a clean, floor-ready finish with fringed ends. Measuring 206 cm high by 142 cm wide and 1 cm deep, the carpet suits placement in a living room, study, or bedroom within an English country house interior to add warmth and pattern to wooden or carpeted flooring.

Malayer rugs originate from the Hamadan region of western Persia, woven primarily during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are recognised for their diverse designs featuring central medallions, stylized animal motifs, and balanced colour palettes.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile secured onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The dyes are typically derived from natural vegetable sources, creating rich terracotta, ivory, and indigo tones.

Authentic pieces display subtle irregularities in hand-knotted construction, soft wear consistent with age, and a flexible handle. The reverse side clearly mirrors the design and knot structure visible on the front face.

A patterned rug grounds neutral contemporary furniture by introducing visual texture, structural geometry, and warm colour tones. Placing it beneath a coffee table or seating group creates an anchored focal point within open-plan spaces.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar prevents fibre breakage while removing surface dust. Professional dry cleaning and immediate spot cleaning with a damp neutral cloth preserve the natural wool fibres and vegetable dyes.
