Born in Moscow in 1874, Barthold's family emigrated to the United States. He was an American citizen even though, later, he was given the French nationality. Like many American painters at the end of the nineteenth century, he came to Paris. and studied with Auguste Cormon and Jean-Paul Laurens.
Barthold won numerous prestigous prizes:, such as :
Silver medal at the National Academy of Design (New York, 1894).
Gold medal at the Salons des Artistes Français as an American (Paris) 1904.
Silver medal at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts (Liège, Belgium 1905).
Silver medal at the International Exhibition (1910)
In Britain, he exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool and at the Royal Academy.
Our gorgeous oil painting on canvas, measures 54 x 65 cm without the frame. The frame, although impressive, is a little fragile and in fair condition only.
