Description

An exceptional C19th large firegrate of neo classical design in polished brass and burnished iron; the iron fireback having a serpentine shaped top with shaped sides to the basket. The front with serpentine bars, the top bar with scrolled ends and brass roundels, terminating in brass ball finials. The impressive pierced and engraved brass apron of exaggerated serpentine form, centred by a shield engraved with a crown and cross swords and flanked by two lions, their paws resting on balls leading to scrolling foliage; all surrounded by a beaded moulding. Standing on scrolled and baluster legs; with raised tapering columns terminating in engraved ball finials.

English circa 1880

Good condition. There is an old small crack in the lower part of the iron back, but does not affect the stability.

This large nineteenth-century firegrate follows a Neoclassical style, constructed from cast iron, wrought iron, and polished brass in warm brass and black colourways. The iron fireback has a serpentine shaped top, behind a basket featuring serpentine bars with scrolled ends, brass roundels, and ball finials. Below, a pierced and engraved brass apron of exaggerated serpentine form centres on a heraldic shield engraved with a crown and crossed swords, flanked by two lions, scrolling foliage, and beaded moulding. Tapered brass columns flank the assembly, rising on scrolled baluster legs with engraved ball finials. An old small crack appears in the lower part of the iron back.
