Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fireside footman is a four-legged metal stand designed to sit on the hearth of an open fire. Originating in the 18th century, it was used to keep kettles, pots, or flatirons warm without placing them directly into ash or flames.

18th and 19th-century hearth footmen were typically constructed from cast iron, forged steel, and brass. High-end examples featured pierced brass tops and aprons mounted on steel legs, allowing heat to disperse safely.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-poured metal joins, irregular hand-cut pierced geometric patterns, and signs of historical heat exposure or natural oxidisation on the underside. Screws and rivets will be hand-cut or uneven rather than modern machine-threaded standard parts.

An antique footman can be placed on a fireplace hearth to display potted plants, logs, or decorative objects. It also functions as a unique low plant stand or decorative riser on sideboards and wide window sills.

To preserve metalware, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth. Brass surfaces can be lightly polished with a microcrystalline wax to prevent tarnishing, while steel and iron components should be kept dry to prevent rust formation.
