Queen Anne Walnut and Feather-banded Bureau, Circa 1710

18th century
Description

A fine Queen Anne walnut bureau, dating from the early 18th century, displaying a wonderful warm colour and rich patina acquired over more than 300 years.

The sloping fall front is beautifully feather-banded and opens to reveal a fitted interior comprising a series of shaped pigeonholes, small drawers and a central sliding well. The writing surface is inset with green leather, decorated with a gilt-tooled border.

Below the fall are two short and two long graduated drawers, with further feather-banding to the drawer fronts and sides. The drawers are fitted with decorative brass handles and escutcheons, some of which are old replacements.

The bureau stands on shaped bracket feet and retains a particularly attractive, characterful appearance, with the lovely colour, figuring and signs of age associated with early walnut furniture.

A handsome and practical example of Queen Anne cabinetmaking, offering both useful storage and an elegant writing surface. Particularly suited to a traditional drawing room, study or country house interior.

This Queen Anne walnut bureau from the 18th century exhibits a warm brown timber colour with rich figuring, shaped bracket feet, and decorative brass escutcheons fitted across the drawers. The piece displays a sloping fall-front lid with a central brass keyhole plate, a narrow moulding running along the edges, and four graduated exterior drawers below the writing flap, each fitted with small drop handles and detailed with linear banding. Measuring 86 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, this compact writing desk provides practical surface space alongside concealed storage capacity. Positioned in a traditional study, a home library, or a formal drawing room, the bureau serves as a functional workspace and a display surface for decorative objects. The compact proportions allow the furniture to sit comfortably against a wall or in an alcove while maintaining historical character through visible signs of age and antique hardware.

A Queen Anne bureau is a piece of case furniture featuring a sloping fall-front writing surface over a chest of drawers, popularised in England during the early 18th century.

These bureaux were typically constructed with pine or oak carcases covered in figured walnut veneers, featuring feather-banding inlays, hand-cut dovetail joints, and engraved brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed backboards, original iron lock mechanisms, and light natural shrinkage or age-related wear to the wood veneer.

A period bureau can serve as a functional home office desk or decorative focal point, paired with contemporary table lamps and minimalist seating to create visual contrast.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually.
