This antique Bessarabian kilim rug from 1900 displays a flatweave tapestry construction in wool. The piece features a dark brown field decorated with eight floral bouquet motifs in shades of pink, blue, green and cream, surrounded by a cream border with a scrolling flower vine. The visible palette includes chestnut, ivory, pale blue, soft pink and sage green, alongside minor repairs and a well-maintained patina across the flat textile surface. The rug measures 203 cm high by 150 cm wide. Suitable for placement on the floor in a traditional living space or bedroom, the textile adds texture and pattern to an interior. The low-profile flatweave construction sits flat against floorboards or under furniture, while the neutral and floral tones complement various room palettes within an English country house interior scheme.

FAQs

Bessarabian kilims were produced during the 19th and early 20th centuries in the historic region of Bessarabia, encompassing parts of modern-day Moldova and Ukraine. Influenced by Western European textile designs, particularly French Aubusson carpets, these flatweave rugs typically feature naturalistic floral patterns against dark fields.

These rugs are hand-woven using pure wool yarns on a cotton or wool warp using traditional flatweave techniques. The tapestry weave construction creates a smooth, pileless surface with clear boundaries around the woven botanical details.

Authentic pieces exhibit flatweave tapestry construction with signature Western-influenced botanical motifs on dark background fields. Hand-spun wool yarns with natural dye variations, irregular edge binding, and age-consistent reverse wear help distinguish genuine antique examples.

A floral Bessarabian kilim introduces organic pattern and texture into traditional, eclectic, or contemporary spaces. Position the rug beneath neutral seating or in a dining area to anchor room schemes, complementing natural wood furniture and linen upholstery.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush head to prevent pulling the woven fibers. Place a quality non-slip pad underneath to reduce friction and wear, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialised cleaning.
