This early Victorian rosewood chiffonier cabinet stands 129.5 cm high, 116 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. The piece is formed from dark brown figured timber enriched with ebony and brass inlay, featuring a frieze drawer decorated with an intricate brass inlaid band above a pair of pleated off-white silk-lined glazed cupboard doors. Classical gilt bronze mask mounts, brass-capped Corinthian columns, and a parcel-gilt gadrooned base complete the structure, which is raised on dark turned bun feet. Inside a home today, this cabinet provides display surfaces and enclosed storage space suitable for a living room, dining room, or hallway. Items can be placed on the main top surface and the raised upper tier shelf, while decorative objects stand securely atop the shelf structure.

FAQs

A chiffonier is a compact storage cabinet or low sideboard that originated in France in the eighteenth century before gaining widespread popularity in Regency and Victorian Britain. Designed with a shallow depth, these pieces typically featured a combination of enclosed cupboards, drawers, and an elevated top shelf for displaying decorative items.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut as primary veneers. Decorative elements often included brass marquetry inlay, gilt-bronze mounts, turned columns, and fabric-backed or pleated silk door panels to protect stored items while adding visual texture.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, thick cut timber veneers, and heavy solid wood carcass construction. Inspection of the reverse paneling, drawer linings, and hand-chased quality of brass mounts or inlay work helps distinguish period examples from later reproductions.

A chiffonier functions effectively as a hallway console, dining room sideboard, or living room accent cabinet in contemporary spaces. The upper tier provides a surface for displaying modern lighting or ceramics, while the enclosed lower cupboard provides hidden storage for dinnerware or linens.

Maintain rosewood surfaces by wiping with a dry microfiber cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers natural oils. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent veneer lifting, brass tarnishing, or fabric fading.
