Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This brass club fender is an Edwardian style fireplace accessory dating from 1930. The piece comprises a solid brass frame with a dipped central rail, vertical spindle supports, and studded trim along the base. Two corner seats feature button-tufted light grey upholstered cushions with a textured weave. The upright supports consist of reeded stems above circular collars resting on a heavy rectangular brass base plate. Measuring 52 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 176 cm deep, the fender provides substantial proportions suitable for a hearth installation. Placement is intended around an open fireplace or wood-burning stove in an English country house setting, where the padded corner seats offer a traditional fender-side spot for warming by the fire. The metallic finish gleams with warm golden tones, contrasting against the muted grey of the fabric upholstery.

FAQs

A club fender is a low, raised metal frame fitted around a hearth, featuring padded corner seats. Originating in 19th-century British gentlemans clubs, it provided additional seating close to the fire while allowing heat to circulate freely throughout the room.

Traditional club fenders feature solid frames crafted from brass, steel, or wrought iron, supported by vertical spindles. The corner seats are typically upholstered in heavy leather, velvet, or wool fabrics, secured with brass studding.

Authentic period examples demonstrate solid brass or iron construction with hand-fitted screws, threaded connections, and natural oxidisation. Original pieces often feature heavier gauge metal bases and traditional horsehair or webbed stuffing within the upholstered pads.

A club fender defines the fireplace area in a living space or study, offering functional perimeter seating without obscuring the hearth. It pairs effectively with both period chimneypieces and minimalist surrounds to add structural interest.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, using dedicated metal polish only if an unpatinated bright finish is desired. Vacuum the upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment and address fabric spills immediately with appropriate cleaner.
