A Woman Artist by the Sea, Ca 1900 French Impressionist Plein Air Oil Painting Study

1900 - 1920
Description

An atmospheric French coastal painting, dating to the turn of the twentieth century and depicting a woman artist seated among the rocks with her portable painting box, absorbed in sketching or painting the seascape before her.

Dressed in a striking rose-pink bonnet and a yellow-green jacket, she sits against an expanse of sea, beneath a sky filled with luminous, windblown clouds.

The picture is a "pochade" :a small, freely painted study made to capture a fleeting moment outdoors, evidently painted for the artist’s own pleasure rather than intended for exhibition or sale. An oil on board that is unsigned, the work has certain stylistic affinities with Alfred Le Petit (1841–1909), the French painter, caricaturist and illustrator, notably in its spirited handling of colour and its sympathetic observation of everyday subjects.

Measuring 24 x 35 cm, the painting is presented in a silvered oak frame. The overall framed size is 30 x 38 cm.

Skippings Fine Arts has dated this French Impressionist Oil Painting to the 1900s.

A French Impressionist oil painting on canvas board, dating from 1900, captures a coastal landscape featuring a female figure seated on rocks before the sea. The work displays impasto brushwork with a palette of blue, pink, yellow-green and white, portraying an open painting box and a windblown sky with clouds. Visible details include energetic brushstrokes, a rose-pink bonnet, and a silvered oak frame enclosing the unsigned study. The dimensions are 24 cm high, 35 cm wide and 1 cm deep, with an overall framed size of 30 cm by 38 cm. This small plein air study suits display in a home today, positioned above a sideboard in a living room, study or hallway. The coastal retreat style brings an atmospheric, historical element to interior walls, complementing traditional or eclectic spaces where intimate figurative and landscape artworks fit the decorative scheme.

En plein air painting involved artists working outdoors directly from nature, focusing on capturing transient effects of natural light, weather, and atmosphere using visible, energetic brushstrokes.

Around 1900, artists frequently used oil paints composed of natural ground pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto stretched linen canvas, wooden panels, or heavy millboard.

Authentic period works feature visible painterly impasto, period-appropriate support materials, natural age-related craquelure, and historical signs of age on the reverse board or stretcher frame.

An Impressionist oil study can be styled in a minimalist modern frame or traditional gilded frame and placed above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or integrated into a curated gallery wall.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, fluctuating humidity, and direct heat sources. Surface dust should be removed gently using only a soft, dry artist brush.
