Woman on a Path, Spring in Provence Ca 1870 the Alpilles South of France Landscape Oil on Canvas

19th century
Description

A beautifully luminous provençal scene with a little peasant woman on a path through a wide and fresh spring landscape. The Alpilles mountain range form a backdrop, while in the foreground we see young vines.

Our painting dates from circa 1870-1880.

While an inscription on the stretcher reads "Baudin", my personal attribution, based on the trace of signature at the lower right of the painting is to the artist Edouard Cauvin.

Edouard Louis Isidore Cauvin was born in Toulon on the mediterranean coast in 1816 and exhibited at the Paris salon from 1938. He mostly devoted himself to the representation of Provençal landscapes and seascapes. Works by the artist are in the fine arts museums of Montauban, Toulon, and the Toulon Maritime Museum.

Our oil on canvas measures 24 x 35 cm. It is presented in a frame which is in fair condition only, with visible wear tear and repair. The overall framed size is 31.5 x 42 cm.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French landscape paintings frequently reflected the movement towards plein air study, capturing natural sunlight, regional topography, and rural life in areas such as Provence and the Barbizon region.

Artists during this era applied oil-based pigments onto linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden frames, occasionally utilising wooden panels for smaller, portable field sketches.

Authentic paintings of this era typically exhibit natural age craquelure across the paint surface, period-appropriate stretcher construction, and historic framing hardware or canvas supplier stamps.

Displaying a historical landscape canvas above a clean-lined modern console table or sideboard creates an engaging visual contrast between classic texture and contemporary furniture design.

Keep the canvas out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, dust the surface lightly with a dry soft-bristled brush, and avoid applying water or liquid solvents.
