The Window, Modernist Still Life with Fruit, Ca 1920 Slightly Cubist French Oil on Canvas

Description

This beautifully coloured and very slightly cubist modernist still life dates from the 1920s. Depicting a plate with peaches and grapes along with a jug and a tray, we see a bit of blue sky through the window in the right hand corner - a lovely touch, which seems to open a whole new world.

The painting is unsigned but a faint inscription "Tullat" on the stretcher and on the back of the canvas may refer to the artist Luc Tullat (born 1895). Tullat signed her work with the male Christian name 'Luc', although she was actually called .. Lucie! Tullat studied at the l’école nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1919 to 1925. She exhibited regularly at Paris’ Salon d’Automne and Salon des Tuileries.

Painted on a reused canvas, a practice common among artists in the early 20th century when materials were expensive, the artwork presents some stable craquelure. It is presented in a beautiful period wood carved frame that matches the painting wonderfully. With the canvas measuring 38 x 46 cm the overall framed size is 51 x 59 cm.
