William IV Rosewood Davenport Desk

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

An elegant early 19th-century Davenport desk, crafted in rich rosewood and presented in very good condition. The beautifully figured timber has been carefully waxed to revive its warm, lustrous colour.

The raised gallery top sits above a fall-front writing surface, newly fitted with hand-dyed green leather. The interior reveals two stationery drawers, a concealed secret drawer operated by a locating pin, and additional storage space.

The finely panelled front is complemented by four working drawers to the right and four matching dummy drawers to the left. Solid turned rosewood legs with brass castors complete this distinguished piece.

A superb example.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact writing desk defined by a sloped writing surface with a hinged top, positioned above a drawer unit or cabinet. Originating in late 18th-century England, the style was commissioned by Captain Davenport and became a standard domestic desk design throughout the 19th century.

William IV Davenport desks were typically crafted using dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut. The writing slope commonly features a leather inset, while the internal framework utilizes hand-cut dovetail joinery and brass fittings.

Authentic William IV pieces produced between 1830 and 1837 feature bold architectural proportions, turned feet, brass castors, and dark figured veneers. Look for original hand-cut dovetail joints on the side drawers and natural wear patterns on the drawer runners.

Due to its compact dimensions, a Davenport desk can be positioned in an empty room corner, alcove, or home office space. Pairing it with subtle task lighting and modern desk accessories allows the natural wood grain and historic design to stand out.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish occasionally along the grain. Keep the desk away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent veneer movement and leather degradation.
