Antique Georgian Oak Chest of Drawers | 18th Century

18th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 18th century Georgian chest of drawers in oak, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and the honest character of English country furniture.

The chest offers two short drawers over three long graduated drawers, each fitted with a pair of brass batwing swan-neck handles and a keyhole, providing generous and practical storage. The drawers are lined in pine.

The case has a moulded top and cockbeaded drawer surrounds, and stands on a moulded base raised on shaped bracket feet, a classic Georgian detail. The back is made up of traditional vertical boards.

The oak displays a wonderful figured grain with lively medullary flashes across the drawer fronts, and a warm, rich colour with a deep aged patina built up over many years.

Presented in good condition for its age, with some marks to the top as can be seen in the photographs. A very desirable Georgian chest, perfect for a bedroom, hallway or living room.

FAQs

Georgian oak furniture from the 18th century is distinguished by symmetrical proportions, robust construction, and functional design, reflecting the transition from earlier joinery techniques to refined cabinet-making styles.

Traditional Georgian chests feature hand-cut dovetail joints, solid oak drawer linings, dust boards positioned between drawers, and hand-cast brass hardware such as batwing or swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planing on the back panels and drawer bases, irregular hand-cut dovetails, original iron lock mechanisms, and natural timber shrinkage or patination consistent with age.

A Georgian oak chest functions as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, creating visual structure when placed against modern neutral walls and paired with understated decorative lighting.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, dust surfaces with a dry soft cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the patina.
