19th century
Description

Exquisite Georgian Golden Oak & Mahogany Banded Chest of Drawers (c. 1790–1820)

A exceptionally striking late Georgian chest of drawers, crafted between 1790 and 1820, boasting an extraordinary hue and superb proportions. Having recently passed through our workshop, this piece has benefited from a careful, full traditional polish, restoring its finish to top-end showroom condition while preserving every inch of its historic integrity and natural patina.

Rich Tone & Striking Contrast

The defining feature of this magnificent chest is the glowing, rich golden oak. The timber possesses a warm, luminous quality that catches the light beautifully, showcasing a vibrant grain structure. This brilliant golden tone is dramatically enhanced by rich mahogany crossbanding that frames the drawer fronts and top. The sharp, sophisticated contrast between the warm oak and the deep crimson-brown mahogany creates a visual impact that elevates this piece into a true statement antique.

Craftsmanship & Fine Architectural Detail

Decorative Turned Columns: Flanking the drawers are elegant, finely turned corner details that lend a subtle architectural sophistication to the front profile.

Classic Foundation: The chest rests securely on its original style of sturdy, sweeping bracket feet, giving it a strong, well-proportioned grounded presence.

Substantial Storage: Offering exceptional versatility, the 2-over-4 drawer configuration (six drawers total) provides deep, smooth-running, and spacious storage capacity.

Width: 118 cm

Depth: 55 cm

Height: 111 cm

Condition Report

Georgian chests of drawers from the 18th and early 19th centuries are known for classical proportions, functional layout designs such as two short over three long drawers, and construction in fine native timbers like oak.

Craftsmen primarily utilised woods such as oak, walnut, and mahogany, incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings, crossbanded veneer borders, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn timber, slightly irregular hand-cut dovetail joinery, period steel locks, original timber backing boards, and natural patination consistent with age.

An antique oak chest acts as a foundational accent piece in modern rooms, providing textural warmth when placed in hallways or bedrooms alongside contemporary artwork and minimalist lighting.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish annually, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct exposure to heat sources.
