Portrait of a Bay Horse - Antique Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

Oil on canvas showing a portrait of a bay horse - Nonino XIII by the German artist Emil Adam (1843-1924). The painting is signed, inscribed and dated 1915. It is mounted in a classic gilt wooden frame.

Adam was born in Munich and was the son of animal painter Benno Adam. He initially intended to devote himself to science, but, carried away by the example of his grandfather, the equestrian painter Albrecht Adam, he decided to be a painter. He studied painting under the guidance of his uncle, the painter Franz Adam, and later under Jean-François Portaels in Brussels. He became one of the last great masters in depicting horses, horse portraits and hunting scenes.

Adam married Josephine Marie, née Wurmb. They had two sons, the painter Richard Benno Adam (1873–1937) and the priest Ernst Adam (1884–1955).

Adam's work consisted primarily of horse paintings, equestrian portraits, and hunting scenes. He was invited with his father to Bohemia, in 1867, to paint the hunting club members portrait, a group of 60 people.

Dimensions - 21.5" x 28" (54.6 x 71.1cm) and 68 x 86 x 5 cm including frame.

Declaration

Rue des Fontenelles has dated this Antique Horse Oil Painting to the 1910s.

This oil painting on canvas depicts a portrait of a bay horse named Nonino XIII in a side profile stance, created in the Victorian style during the 1910 period by the German artist Emil Adam. The artwork displays a rich brown horse coat texture, a leather bridle detail, a paddock setting with a circular building in the background, and a signature inscription with a date. The piece is mounted inside a classic gilt wooden frame with visible surface wear. The painting measures 54.6 x 71.1 cm, with overall dimensions of 68 x 86 x 5 cm including the frame. It suits placement above the mantel in an English country house interior.

Equestrian portraiture emerged as a prominent genre in 18th and 19th-century Europe, celebrating equine bloodlines, sporting achievements, and land ownership. These works were typically commissioned by landowners and sporting enthusiasts to document favoured thoroughbreds, hunters, and stud horses within realistic estate settings.

Artists utilised oil-based pigments mixed with natural drying oils painted onto stretched linen canvas or hardwood panels. Frames were typically constructed from carved timber coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf or dark hardwood veneers to complement period interiors.

Authentic period paintings exhibit natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate wood stretcher shrinkage, and hand-tacked canvas edges. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals historical varnish layers or restoration work, while signature placements and realistic anatomical proportions typical of the era help verify authenticity.

Position the painting centrally above a dark timber sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish a balanced focal point. Pairing historical equestrian artwork with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a refined, layered aesthetic that bridges heritage art and modern interior design.

Position the artwork away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and heat sources to prevent paint cracking or canvas distortion. Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical agents, and consult a qualified conservator for periodic varnish cleaning.
