Welsh Conway Valley Georgian Dresser Base

18th century
Description

These are getting very rare a lovely Welsh Dresser from the Conway Valley, made from Oak and dating to the early Georgian period, having a wonderful aged patina and colour. Once upon a time it would have had a plate rack and the outline can still be seen on the top. Its not perfect, as anything that is approaching 300 years old wouldn’t be, but its faults are minor and its has oodles of character. In overall very good original condition.

This Welsh Conway Valley Georgian dresser base is made from oak with a warm brown colour and an aged patina. The piece has a rectangular top, two fielded panel cupboard doors with brass keyholes, and multiple cockbeaded drawers fitted with round brass drop handles. The base sits flat on a simple plinth. Surface details include visible timber grain, minor signs of age across the wood, and a faint outline on the top surface where a plate rack once stood. The dresser base measures 91 cm high, 169 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. It functions as a storage unit and display surface in a dining room, hallway, or living space, holding tableware, linens, or decorative items while serving as a traditional focal point against a wall.

A Georgian Welsh dresser base is a regional storage cabinet produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, characterised by solid oak construction, fielded panel doors, and a combination of drawers and cupboards tailored for domestic function.

These pieces were typically constructed from locally sourced English or Welsh oak using hand-planed boards, mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail drawer joints, and solid wood back panels, completed with brass drop handles and brass escutcheons.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-tooling, original drawer linings with hand-cut dovetails, historical wear around keyholes and handles, and natural shrinkage or oxidisation in the oak timber consistent with age.

An antique oak dresser base can serve as a functional sideboard in a hallway, dining room, or living area, anchored by minimalist ceramics, contemporary artwork, or oversized table lamps to contrast historical character with modern clean lines.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish annually along the grain, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement.
