This antique French Rococo Revival fire screen dates from around the 1900 period and is constructed from gilt metal, brass, and steel mesh with a bright gold finish. The rectangular frame holds a fine wire mesh panel beneath an elaborate acanthus leaf scroll cresting, a central mask motif, and dangling floral ornamentation, all supported by scrollwork legs and curved cabriole feet. Minor wear is present on the metal surfaces commensurate with age and long-term use. The screen measures 92 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Position this decorative fire screen directly in front of an active or decorative fireplace hearth in a living room, drawing room, or master bedroom to enhance an interior with classic French chateau style. It functions practically to catch stray embers when a fire is lit, while maintaining an elegant aesthetic presence during the warmer months when the fireplace is not in use.

Gilt fire screens originated in 18th-century France as functional heat shields designed to protect inhabitants and delicate furnishings from intense fireplace heat while allowing warmth to circulate. Over time, particularly during the Louis XV and Rococo Revival eras, they evolved into decorative hearth centrepieces crafted from cast metals and wire mesh.

Traditional French fire screens were constructed using cast brass, bronze, or iron framework finished with gold leaf or mercury gilding. The central panel typically incorporated woven steel or iron mesh, fabric, or painted glass to arrest flying sparks while maintaining airflow.

Authentic period pieces exhibit heavy, cast metal framing with hand-chased decorative details such as acanthus leaves, masks, and Rococo scrollwork. Look for hand-riveted assembly, gentle surface wear or natural oxidisation on the gilt finish, and authentic weight consistent with solid cast metal.

A gilt fire screen serves as a structural focal point when positioned inside an unused or decorative fireplace opening. It can also be placed on a stone hearth adjacent to contemporary fire tools to introduce historical contrast and texture within a modern living room.

Dust the frame and mesh regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a delicate brush to prevent debris buildup. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these can strip original gilding and lacquered finishes; delicate metal conservation wax may be applied lightly if necessary.
