1930s Silver J W Benson Pocket Watch and Chain

1920 - 1940
Description

1930s silver J W Benson pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a 15-jewel Swiss stem-winding movement, identified as by Cyma, which is working nicely. The nickel regulator with Breguet hairspring is a later period replacement. The movement is signed with the name of the original retailer, J W Benson. It is all protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both case backs for London 1936 together with a sponsor’s mark for J W Benson. The case is in good condition, just light surface marks to the back, nothing too serious at all.

The watch glass is in good condition with just minor marks if viewed closely.

The signed dial is in good condition, just some light discolouration to the subsidiary seconds dial.

The watch comes with single Churchill style silver chain, 33cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. Also included is a silver fob hallmarked for Birmingham 1938, awarded for the NALGO Newman Cup,1938-9, V Stoneman. The front of the fob has rose gold wash detail, a small patch of wear where it has rubbed.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

This 1930s gentleman's pocket watch and chain set belongs to the Art Deco period. The open-face timepiece is crafted from silver with a glass crystal and features a white dial marked with black Roman numerals, minute track, and a subsidiary seconds dial. The movement is signed by the retailer J W Benson, and the case bears London hallmarks for 1936. Accompanied by a 33 cm interlocking link silver chain, a T-bar, and a clasp, the ensemble includes a silver fob medal hallmarked for Birmingham 1938 with rose gold wash details on the front. The watch case measures 50 mm in diameter, excluding the top winding crown and loop. This piece fits neatly onto a desk in a study or a library as a decorative collectible or a wearable accessory.

J W Benson was a prominent London horologist operating from the mid-nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, known for producing official British timepieces, pocket watches, and personal accessories.

Timepieces from this era typically feature solid or plated silver cases, white enamel dials, glass crystals, steel hands, and internal brass mechanical movements driven by mainsprings.

Authentic examples feature silver hallmarks on the interior case back, distinct maker markings on the dial or movement plate, clean dial printing, and period-appropriate mechanical architecture.

A pocket watch can be worn attached to a waistcoat or jacket lapel via an Albert chain, or displayed inside a glass horological dome as a decorative object.

Store the watch in a dry environment, clean silver components gently with a specialised polishing cloth, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced periodically by a qualified horologist.
