This early 20th century Edwardian jardiniere takes the form of a rounded vessel made from polished brass with a rich brass gold finish and a dark interior. The exterior displays detailed hand-chased relief work showing swirling cloud motifs, dragon and avian imagery, accompanied by a geometric key fret pattern around the rim. A moulded stepped circular foot supports the bowl below the bulbous body. The dimensions measure 33 cm in diameter by 25 cm in height. Position this piece on a sideboard top in a sunlit conservatory to house a favourite houseplant or potted arrangement. The reflective metallic surface brings warmth to living spaces while complementing both traditional and contemporary room schemes.

Japanese metalwork jardinieres gained international popularity during the late Meiji and early Taisho periods, as craft workshops adapted traditional casting and chasing techniques for export objects intended to display houseplants in Western interiors.

These vessels were typically formed from heavy brass, cast or hand-hammered into shape, and finished with surface chasing to create relief decoration featuring clouds, dragons, and geometric border patterns.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-chased detail, visible turning or hand-tooling marks inside the interior, and natural patination or oxidisation on the base and inside surfaces where water was present.

Place the jardiniere on a dark timber sideboard, console table, or deep windowsill, filling it with vibrant green foliage such as ferns or trailing plants to contrast against the polished metallic finish.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a dedicated metal polish sparingly if maintaining high sheen; always use a plastic liner inside when placing live plants to prevent internal moisture oxidisation.
