FAQs

Edwardian writing tables, produced between 1901 and 1910, often drawer upon eighteenth-century revival styles such as Queen Anne and Chippendale. They typically feature lighter proportions than Victorian antecedents, incorporating figured timbers like walnut or mahogany, graceful cabriole legs, and tidy drawer arrangements suited for domestic writing.

Cabinetmakers during the Edwardian period favoured high-quality hardwoods, including walnut, mahogany, and satinwood. Desk drawers were routinely constructed using solid timber linings with hand-cut dovetail joints, complemented by brass, wooden, or ceramic drawer knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished joinery, including uneven dovetail pins in the drawer linings, and natural age-related wear to the drawer runners and feet. Look for consistent grain patterns in the walnut veneers, original underlying timber oxidisation, and period-appropriate drawer construction.

An antique writing table can serve as a functional workstation or vanity table within modern interiors. Pairing dark timber with contemporary desk accessories, minimalist task lighting, or neutral wall palettes helps balance the historic character of the furniture with modern aesthetics.

Walnut surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and polished occasionally using a high-grade beeswax polish to nourish the wood and preserve the patina. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme changes in humidity to prevent wood movement and finish deterioration.
