Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Victorian fire screen dates to 1850 and is formed with a giltwood frame in a French Chateau style. The warm gold finished timber supports an integrated textile panel depicting figures in traditional rural attire, displaying shades of blue, red, brown, and cream. The arched frame incorporates egg and dart moulding along the borders, complemented by turned side columns topped with carved finials and terminating in scroll feet at the base. Visible details include carved decorative flourishes, structural joints at the corners, and a stretcher bar joining the lower legs for stability. The piece measures 111 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. Positioned near a fireplace hearth, it serves as a decorative room accessory in a traditional living space or drawing room.

FAQs

A Victorian fire screen is a decorative hearth accessory designed during the nineteenth century to shield room occupants from the direct heat and glare of an open fire. These screens often featured ornate carved frames housing needlework, tapestry, or painted fabric panels.

Traditional fire screens were constructed using hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or carved gilded timber. The central panels commonly incorporated hand-stitched needlepoint, wool tapestries, glass, or silk embroidery set within a freestanding frame.

Authentic pieces display signs of natural aging, such as subtle craquelure, oxidisation, or minor surface wear to the gilding. Construction details like hand-carved joinery, period rear panel fixings, and hand-woven textile backing also help verify authenticity.

In modern interiors, a carved gilt fire screen serves as a focal point when placed in front of an unused fireplace, inside a hearth alcove, or as a decorative accent in a living area or bedroom.

Dust the giltwood frame gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners which can damage the gold leaf finish. The tapestry panel should be dusted lightly on low suction through a mesh screen to remove loose dust without pulling the fibres.
