These two antique copper and brass jugs date from circa 1900 in the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts styles. The pair consists of a warm-toned copper lidded ewer with raised relief decoration, an elegantly curved brass handle, an ornate spout and a hinged lid, accompanied by a polished solid brass pitcher featuring a serpentine handle and a broad spout. Both metal vessels display visible signs of age and historical use, including minor dents and repairs on the copper jug alongside general surface wear and marks. The copper jug measures 32 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep, while the brass jug stands 28 cm high with a width and depth of 16 cm. Ideal for placement on a sideboard top in an English country house interior, these decorative pieces add historic character and traditional metalwork texture to a room. They serve as striking display items or functional vessels for flower arrangements, bringing warm metallic tones and period craftsmanship into a living space or dining room today.

Art Nouveau metalware is characterised by organic shapes, flowing curves, and motifs inspired by natural forms such as plants, flowers, and vines. Crafted predominantly around the turn of the twentieth century, these pieces often feature repousse and chased details in metals like copper, brass, and pewter.

Pitchers from this era were frequently fabricated from sheet copper and cast or stamped brass. Components such as spouts, handles, rims, and bases were often joined using solder or rivets, combining contrasting metals for decorative effect.

Authentic period metalware usually displays signs of handcrafted construction, such as slight irregularities in hammering, dovetailed or brazed seams, and age-appropriate surface oxidisation. Stamped maker marks, registration numbers, or recognizable foundry symbols near the base also help confirm authenticity.

Antique copper and brass vessels can be styled as standalone decorative accents on open shelving, sideboards, or mantelpieces. They function well when paired with neutral ceramics, dried floral arrangements, or alongside contemporary dark wood furniture to provide textural contrast.

To maintain antique metalware, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads that remove historical patina; if polishing is desired, use a gentle metal polish specifically formulated for copper or brass and apply sparingly.
