Marlborough Antiques & Interiors has dated this Bleached Oak Pedestal Desk to the 1900s.

Of traditional pedestal form, the desk is arranged with three drawers across the frieze, the wider central drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, above two pedestals each fitted with three graduated drawers. The drawers retain their attractive original brass drop handles and brass key escutcheons, the aged surface of the brass providing an appealing contrast against the bleached oak.

The rectangular writing surface retains its original black leather inset, framed by a moulded oak edge. The dark leather works particularly well with the pale oak and gives the desk a strong, architectural appearance.

The sides and reverse are particularly well finished, with fielded panelled pedestals and a panelled back, allowing the desk to stand comfortably away from a wall in the centre of a study, library or home office. Traditional dovetailed construction is visible at the corners and throughout the drawer work.

The bleaching has given the oak a soft, almost limed appearance while deliberately retaining areas of age, wear and patination, resulting in a much lighter and more contemporary interpretation of a classic late Victorian/Edwardian pedestal desk
