372 X 576cm Antique Heriz Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Heriz carpets seldom come with an allover design, they usually have a very large central medallion which can be great, but this exceptional example looks more like a Ziegler with the curvelinear drawing. It is a far cry from the more angular, spiky drawing of typical Heriz. This is a great advantage when it comes to decorating as the more realistic flowers and leaves are more in tune with the designs of other soft furnishings you may have nearby- curtains and upholstery, for example. The lovely warmth of the tomato red field really gives a backbone to your space and there other accent colours of pale yellow, pale green and light blue to pick out and play with in the room. A real favourite of mine and now reduced in price to help it find a home.

This antique Heriz carpet dates to 1900 and displays a Persian style with wool and cotton construction. The piece features an all-over field design with geometric palmettes, floral spandrels, and a multi-stripe border. The tomato red field is accompanied by navy blue, cream, pale yellow, pale green, and light blue tones. The pattern includes curvilinear flowers and leaves rendered in a naturalistic drawing style. The rug measures 372 cm by 576 cm. Suitable for an English country house interior, the carpet works well in principal reception rooms or large living spaces, positioned beneath furniture arrangements to anchor a room. The warm red background provides a strong visual foundation, while the softer accent colours coordinate easily with existing soft furnishings, curtains, and upholstery. The traditional motifs and generous dimensions suit period properties and large-scale residential schemes requiring an expansive decorative floor covering.

Heriz carpets originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran, renowned for their durable hand-knotted construction and bold geometric interpretations of traditional Persian floral motifs.

Heriz carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using a thick wool pile woven onto a strong cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic Heriz carpets feature asymmetrical hand-tied knots, angular floral patterns, a thick wool pile, and natural colour variation visible across the field and reverse.

A large Heriz carpet anchors open-plan living spaces or dining areas, providing warmth and graphic balance beneath neutral contemporary or period furniture.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a beat-bar attachment, spot cleaning with mild solutions, and using a protective rug underlay help preserve the natural wool fibres.
