Antique George Jones & Sons “Abbey” Blue & White Transferware Sweet Dish, circa 1920s

A charming small English blue and white transferware sweet dish or tray from the celebrated Abbey pattern by George Jones & Sons of Staffordshire, dating to the early 20th century.

The centre is beautifully transfer printed in deep blue with the characteristic Abbey pattern, depicting romantic Gothic abbey architecture and ruins within a wooded landscape. The scene is surrounded by a particularly attractive moulded and transfer-decorated scrolling border with a gently shaped rim.

Despite its small proportions, the piece displays an impressive amount of detail and is a lovely example of the romantic architectural transferware for which the George Jones Abbey pattern is well known.

The underside carries the blue printed “ABBEY 1790” cartouche backstamp. The 1790 forms part of the Abbey pattern marking and should not be interpreted as the date of manufacture.

Small dishes of this approximate size are documented in the George Jones Abbey range as sweet trays, with comparable examples dating from the 1920s.
