Frederick “Fred” Stead (1863–1940) was born in Saltaire, Yorkshire. He studied at Saltaire Art School before winning a scholarship to the National Art Training School, later the Royal College of Art. He subsequently taught at Saltaire and Bradford, becoming head of Saltaire Art School in 1896. A successful portrait and landscape painter, he exhibited repeatedly at the Royal Academy, and his work is represented in public collections including Bradford and Calderdale.
