Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Textured heavy rag paper: typical English watercolour sheet before wood-pulp papers became common.
Soft border toning along the margins: gradual darkening from a former mount over decades.
Scratching-out and bodycolour highlights: traditional watercolour techniques used in the mid-nineteenth century.
Twin towers of Beverley Minster in the background: faithful local topographical view.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

FAQs

Victorian watercolour landscapes from the mid-19th century are defined by detailed observational depictions of natural scenery, waterways, and industrial developments. Artists utilised layered washes of water-soluble pigment on rag paper to capture light, atmosphere, and topographical detail.

19th-century artists employed water-soluble pigments derived from natural minerals and organic dyes applied to heavy handmade cotton or linen rag paper. Gum arabic was commonly used as a binder to adhere pigment particles to the paper surface.

Authenticity is evaluated through paper age, watermarks, light foxing or natural discolouration, and signature style. Period-correct pigmants, brush techniques, and provenance records further confirm an artworks origin.

Antique watercolours pair well with both traditional schemes and modern minimalist spaces. Framing the artwork in a contemporary mat and slim wooden frame allows historical works to integrate into modern gallery walls or above cabinetry.

To prevent fading and deterioration, watercolours should be framed using acid-free mounting materials and museum-grade UV-filtering glass. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and store in an environment with stable humidity levels.
