ANTIQUE ARTS & CRAFTS BRASS AND WROUGHT IRON COAL BUCKET / LOG BIN BY HENRY LOVERIDGE, CIRCA 1886
This highly decorative yet practical piece combines a beautifully aged brass body with a sturdy wrought iron three-legged stand and movable carrying handle, making it an excellent example of late 19th-century domestic metalware.
The bin has an appealing fluted brass design, characteristic of the period, and retains a wonderful natural aged patina. It has been only lightly cleaned and remains in an authentic, original condition, preserving the character and surface associated with a genuine Victorian antique.
Henry Loveridge & Co – Wolverhampton
The history of Henry Loveridge & Co dates back to the mid-19th century, when Henry Loveridge was associated with William Shoolbread, a Scottish-born retailer and manufacturer who established himself in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands.
Shoolbread acquired a japanning factory which was subsequently relocated to a new site on the outskirts of Wolverhampton. By the mid-1850s, tinplate wares and japanned metalware had become an important part of the firm's production. Henry Loveridge continued this tradition following Shoolbread's retirement in 1860, trading as Henry Loveridge & Co.
Although the firm's japanned and tin wares were predominantly functional rather than purely ornamental, the company also produced more decorative pieces. Henry Loveridge's products are of particular interest to collectors of Victorian metalware, Arts & Crafts antiques, brassware and Wolverhampton-made objects.
The firm used a distinctive circular registered trade mark incorporating the stylised HL motif on its tin wares. Henry Loveridge died in 1892, while the company continued under the management of his relative Samuel Loveridge until it finally ceased trading in 1927.
The Antique Coal Bin
This attractive Victorian brass coal bucket / log bin is a fine example of the practical domestic metalwork produced during the late 19th century. The combination of fluted brass, wrought iron feet and movable handle gives it considerable decorative appeal, while its generous proportions make it equally suitable today as a log basket, firewood holder, coal scuttle or decorative storage container.
The underside bears the Loveridge maker's mark, supporting its attribution to Henry Loveridge.
The surface has deliberately been left with its natural antique patina and signs of age, rather than being aggressively polished. This gives the piece an authentic period appearance and allows the character of the original brass to remain visible.
Condition
Excellent antique condition, with an attractive aged and naturally patinated surface. The piece has been only lightly cleaned and remains largely in its original condition. As expected with an antique of this age, there are signs of age and use commensurate with its approximately 140-year history.
