Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Hand-peened copper rivets securing the mounts: Victorian metalworking methods.
Cast brass handles stamped with pattern number 16: late nineteenth-century workshop production.
Dark oxidised patina and verdigris inside the scoops: honest wear from coal fires.
Rolled wired rims along the curved scoops: provides strength for carrying fuel.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of Victorian copper helmet-style coal scuttles, dating from around 1880, bring traditional warmth to a home. Each piece comprises a copper body with a copper brown tone, paired with brass swing handles at the top and shaped brass grips at the rear. Both coal scuttles stand on flared circular pedestal feet, with one scuttle showing an old soldered repair at the inside rear. Measuring 43 cm high, 30.5 cm wide and 45.5 cm deep, these scoop-shaped items fit comfortably beside a fireplace hearth. In a modern interior, these scuttles serve practical purposes by holding coal, logs, or kindling, and they also function well as magazine tidies. The design features a smooth metal finish alongside stamped numbers on the handles, highlighting their period character. Placed on a hearth, the pair creates a functional storage solution for solid fuel while contributing a classic metal texture to living spaces.

FAQs

A coal scuttle, also known as a coal hod, is a container designed to hold a supply of coal near a domestic fireplace. Popularised during the 19th century, these vessels featured practical shapes such as the helmet design to facilitate pouring fuel directly into grates.

Late Victorian coal scuttles were typically crafted from sheet copper or brass, featuring riveted seams, rolled rims, and cast metal handles for durability near heat. The interiors often showed hand-hammered joinery and occasional tinned linings to resist oxidisation.

Authentic pieces from around 1880 exhibit hand-riveted joints, heavy-gauge copper construction, and natural wear or patination on the base and handles. Modern reproductions often use thinner sheet metal, uniform machine rivets, and lack historical hand-finished details.

Beyond traditional hearth placement, copper scuttles can be used as decorative planters, umbrella stands, or containers for kindling and logs beside a wood-burning stove. The warm tone of copper provides visual contrast against stone, brick, or contemporary dark painted walls.

To maintain the metal finish, wipe with a soft dry cloth and apply a dedicated metal polish sparingly if a bright shine is desired. Alternatively, leave unpolished to allow the natural dark patina and character to develop over time while avoiding abrasive chemicals.
