Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coal scuttle, also referred to as a purdonium when styled as an enclosed box, is a specialized metal vessel designed to hold coal near a domestic fireplace. Originating prominently in the 18th and 19th centuries, these containers prevented coal dust from escaping while providing immediate fuel for open fires.

Historic coal scuttles were primarily fabricated from brass, copper, sheet iron, or zinc. Brass versions often featured sheet-metal construction with repousse ornamentation, cast brass handles, and turned bun or paw feet.

Authentic period pieces display signs of manual construction, such as hand-riveted joints, rolled edges, dovetailing, and slight variations in repousse patterning. Original brass pieces typically show age-appropriate wear and minor oxidisation near seams and handles.

In contemporary settings, brass scuttles serve as decorative hearth accents positioned alongside wood-burning stoves or open fireplaces. They are frequently repurposed as planters for indoor greenery or utilised to store kindling, firewood, and fireplace tools.

Brass surfaces should be dusted with a soft, dry cloth. To maintain polished finishes, apply a non-abrasive metal polish sparingly; unlacquered brass can alternatively be left to develop a natural patina over time.
