Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a French flat-top writing desk that emerged during the seventeenth century and became prominent in the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras. Characterised by a series of inline drawers beneath a flat writing surface, these desks were designed to stand in the centre of a room rather than against a wall.

These desks typically feature hardwood veneers such as mahogany, kingwood, or rosewood over an oak carcass. The decorative elements consist of cast bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, alongside an inset leather writing surface with gilded tooling.

Key features include straight, tapered, fluted legs with brass or bronze sabots, symmetrical geometric veneering, and classical brass or ormolu mounts. Original drawer linings often show hand-dovetailed joinery and period-appropriate lock mechanisms.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office or living space, pairing it with a contemporary chair to create contrast. Complement the timber tones and gilt details with neutral wall finishes and modern task lighting.

Dust the timber and metalwork regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaners that can damage the gilt finish. Treat the leather writing surface with a specialised leather conditioner periodically and position the piece away from direct heat sources.
