Georgian Cuban Mahogany Chest of Drawers C. 1770

A charmingly small solid and very well proportioned Cuban mahogany chest of drawers made in c. 1770 retaining the original full oak lined drawers with very fine dovetailed joints.

A single board of mahogany forms the oversailing top with thumb moulded border over four graduated drawers with superbly matched and lowing solid mahogany fronts and with a solid single board of Cuban mahogany to each side and an unusual and original, high quality, fielded back panel.

Each drawer with very attractive and substantial early cast brass handles which are, in my view, later replacements.

The chest once had carrying handles at each side but these are no longer present.

All of the drawers open and close smoothly and the quality of construction the thickly cut oak drawer bases are chamfered and fielded – again a high quality detail.

Bracket feet are original also and the whole has a very good colour.

This chest is so well made and has clearly always been well cared for. With another three centuries of care and use I suspect it will still be going strong and look exactly the same.

Condition:

A few small dings, marks and light scratches consistent with age and use and some additional glue blocks added behind some feet and inside the carcase at the back to support the runners. The first phase construction with no dust boards and certainly given the chest once had side carry handles may indicate an earlier George II date. There is a small amount of old worm holes in the base of the chest and bottom drawer – long dead and treated. The chest has been restored and refinished at some point, probably in the late 19th century.

A rare small and entirely usable George III chest of drawers in solid Cuban mahogany with wonderful chatoyancy and colour.

Extremely heavy for its size and in excellent condition.

Dimensions are:

28.25 inches high, 28.25 inches wide and 18 inches deep. The internal (usable) heights of the drawers are top drawer 3 inches, 2nd drawer 4 inches, third drawer 5 inches, bottom drawer 6 inches.
