Antique Small 19th Century Oak Chest of Drawers | Bracket Feet

19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 19th century chest of drawers in oak, a neat and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and compact, apartment-friendly proportions.

It has four long graduated drawers, all cockbeaded and oak-lined, each with a pair of engraved brass plate handles and a keyhole escutcheon.

The moulded top sits above a shaped apron, and the chest stands on splayed bracket feet; the back is of traditional pine boards.

The oak displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, rich colour with a mellow patina built up over many years.

Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable small oak chest, a perfect addition to any bedroom, landing or hallway.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Rough-sawn horizontal backboards: shrinkage gaps from natural drying over many decades.
Engraved brass handles: backplate pattern popular in the late Georgian era.
Old ring marks and stains on top: honest domestic wear built up over generations.
Solid oak drawer linings: sturdy provincial joinery before pine secondary wood became standard.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

FAQs

Chests of drawers from the 19th century frequently reflect Georgian and Victorian design influences, featuring solid oak construction, graduated drawers, decorative brass bail handles, and bracket feet or plinth bases.

Primary woods typically included solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, while drawer linings were often constructed from secondary timbers such as pine or deal. Hardware generally consisted of cast brass backplates and handles.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, original brass escutcheons, signs of natural timber shrinkage, and hand-planed secondary boards on the rear casing.

A compact oak chest serves well as a functional bedside table, hallway storage, or living room accent. Pairing warm timber tones with neutral walls and contemporary art creates a balanced, layered design scheme.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood finish. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage and warping.
