Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Oak drawer linings with central muntins: standard cabinet work around 1800.
Upright pine backboards with hand planing: early nineteenth-century construction.
Splayed bracket feet and shaped apron: classic late Georgian proportions.
Crossbanded satinwood border on the top: fine late eighteenth-century veneer work.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian bow front chest of drawers is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber finish and flame mahogany veneer. The piece displays a curved bowfront design fitted with four graduated drawers, each containing oval brass backplates and handles with keyhole escutcheons between them. Reeded mouldings run along the top edge, and the furniture stands on splayed bracket feet. The dimensions measure 93 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. Traditional storage furniture of this style suits placement in a bedroom, hallway, or living room as an accent piece alongside other period items in an English country house setting. The upper surface provides space for lamps, framed photographs, or decorative objects, while the four internal compartments offer practical storage capacity for clothing, linens, or household items.

FAQs

Georgian bowfront chests are characterised by a convex curved front profile, designed primarily during the late 18th and early 19th centuries to soften room angles while maximizing storage capacity.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilized solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcases, finished with cast brass handle plates and hand-cut joinery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings with original grain alignment, hand-wrought iron fixings, and minor timber shrinkage consistent with age.

Position the chest against a neutral wall in a hallway or bedroom, balancing the dark mahogany wood tones with modern ceramics, minimalist table lamps, or structured artwork.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a beeswax polish periodically to preserve the original patina.
