A Georgian Mahogany Bureau Desk, C1760-80, Exceptional Interior, Bracket Feet

18th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A Georgian Mahogany Bureau Desk, C1760-80, Exceptional Interior, Bracket Feet.

An impressive early George 111, circa 1760-1780, mahogany fall front bureau desk of bold proportions and exacting design standards.

Presenting some rare design elements which stand apart from other bureau of the period which suggest a fine cabinet-makers workshop, possibly London.

With an exquisite interior with several serpentine shape drawers with ebony stringing, architectural columns either side of the central drawer which slide out to reveal the usual secret compartments. Most unusual are the miniature drawers beneath which slide out to support the drop down desk top, often these are simple pull supports.

Handsome brass pierced handles and central escutcheons, with working locks and a key. We believe the escutcheons to be original whilst the handles are probably a 19th century later alteration and show evidence of this inside the drawer fronts. Each drawer has fine dovetail joints and oak lun d throughout the piece.

The well constructed and robust bureau sits well upon handsome bracket feet.

A very original piece in structurally excellent condition, showing evidence of some use and patination which is minimal expected. We shall provide and even wax polish and check all joints etc before it leaves workshop.

A Georgian mahogany bureau is a slant-front writing desk produced during the reigns of King George I through King George IV (17141830). It typically features a sloping drop-down writing flap resting on lopers, revealing an internal arrangement of small drawers, pigeonholes, and central compartments above a chest of drawers.

18th-century bureaux were constructed using dense hardwoods such as Cuban or West Indian mahogany, often featuring pine or oak secondary timber for drawer linings. Joinery techniques included hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-carved bracket feet, and cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic 18th-century bureaux show signs of hand craftsmanship, including irregular hand-cut dovetails, tool marks on structural backs, and natural shrinkage cracks along wide timber panels. Original hardware will exhibit cast brass irregularities and hand-filed finishes around keyholes and hinges.

A Georgian bureau can serve as a functional compact workstation or focal piece in a living area, study, or hallway. Modern interiors balance the deep tone of mahogany by placing the desk against neutral plaster walls alongside contemporary lighting or abstract artwork.

Maintain the finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year, buffing gently along the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent veneer movement and wood cracking.
