This 19th-century sideboard stands as a fine example of Sheraton Revival design, originating from the London workshop of Hewetsons in 1880. Constructed from mahogany with contrasting satinwood inlay, the piece exhibits warm brown timber tones alongside intricate floral marquetry panels. The design incorporates a shaped gallery back, twin stepped pedestal cabinets, original brass lion mask ring handles, and tapered square legs with spade feet. Practical dimensions measure 113 cm high, 180 cm wide, and 66.5 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a dining room or a grand hallway, the sideboard offers functional surface space alongside enclosed storage for hosting and display purposes. The fitted interior includes a shelf and a sliding wine tray behind the cabinet doors, complemented by multiple drawers situated around the central kneehole section. Original keys remain with the cabinet, completing a comprehensive ensemble suited to traditional and period-style interiors.

FAQs

Sheraton Revival emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing inspiration from Thomas Sheratons late eighteenth-century neoclassical designs. Characterised by slender tapered legs, symmetrical proportions, geometric veneering, and refined marquetry inlays, this style emphasises elegance and balanced line work over heavy ornamentation.

Nineteenth-century sideboards of this caliber were primarily constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers. Decorative inlays often utilised contrasting timbers such as satinwood, boxwood, and rosewood for marquetry panels, complemented by cast brass handles and brass escutcheon plates.

Authentic pieces by established London makers like Hewetsons often feature maker marks, stamped metal plaques, or paper labels on drawer interiors or back panels. Additional indicators include hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass hardware, original lock mechanisms, and authentic age-related patination on unexposed timber surfaces.

An antique mahogany sideboard functions well as an anchor piece in a grand hallway or formal dining space. Pair the piece with modern abstract artwork hung above, contemporary ceramic table lamps, or minimal glass vessels to contrast the detailed marquetry with clean modern lines.

Preserve the wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking, lifting, or timber sun-bleaching.
