Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton Revival furniture, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reinterprets the Neoclassical designs of Thomas Sheraton. Key features include refined proportions, geometric symmetry, fine mahogany construction, and contrasting satinwood or marquetry inlays.

Sideboards from this period were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or oak, often finished with flame mahogany or satinwood veneers. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass ring handles, backplates, and escutcheons.

Authentic Edwardian pieces exhibit hand-finished dovetail drawer joints, original brass hardware with natural patination, timber showing age-appropriate oxidisation, and precise decorative crossbanding or marquetry.

Position the piece against a contemporary neutral wall to contrast its deep timber tones. Pair the surface with minimalist ceramic vases, contemporary table lamps, or abstract artwork hung directly above to create a balanced scheme.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain, and avoid placement near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading.
