Richard Principal Leitch Watercolour Painting – A Scene in Tivoli 1860

Description

Watercolour with scratching-out on wove paper by Richard Principal Leitch (1827-1882). Inscribed on the original mount R. P. Leitch Tivoli 1860. In the period between 1847 and 1861, he was particularly associated with the Illustrated London News, and in 1859 travelled to Italy to cover the Franco-Italian war for the periodical.

Condition: The mount has been replaced and the watercolour has been cleaned and retains strong colours. Part of the original mount showing the inscriptions has been kept.

The brother of William Leighton Leitch, Richard Principal Leitch was best known as a painter of river and coastal scenes, especially of the Thames and the coasts of France and Holland.

He also painted more formalised landscapes, using a characteristic grey to represent shadows. His work was exhibited from 1840 at leading London venues, including ten pictures at the Royal Academy and five at the Royal Society of British Artists. He also worked as a prolific illustrator and successful drawing master. He wrote several instructional books, including one, Easy Studies in Water-Colour Painting (1881), which was jointly authored with John Callow.
