FAQs

Late 19th-century Scottish landscape paintings frequently focus on atmospheric weather conditions, rural country life, and coastal topographies. Artists associated with the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) captured tonal variation and dramatic skies using fluid washes and muted colour palettes.

Artists typically applied water-based pigments onto heavy cotton rag paper, card, or board. Techniques involved translucent washes layered to build depth, alongside dry brushing to create texture in natural scenery.

Authentic period watercolours often display natural age-related paper toning or foxing. Monograms or signatures, period-correct board backing, and evidence of historic hand-applied washes assist in verifying age and origins.

A pair of small antique watercolours can be hung vertically in narrow spaces or stacked within a gallery wall. Pairing traditional framed or unframed artworks alongside contemporary furniture creates visual texture through historic contrast.

Watercolours must be kept away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity to prevent fading and mould growth. Displaying works under UV-filtering glass with acid-free mounting materials ensures long-term preservation of the paper substrate.
