Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian credenza is a side cabinet developed during the nineteenth century, designed primarily for drawing rooms and dining rooms to store and display decorative items. These pieces typically feature a central solid cupboard flanked by curved or straight glazed display doors, decorated with fine veneers and metal mounts.

Craftsmen constructed these cabinets using a softwood or mahogany carcase veneered with figured timbers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Intricate marquetry panels were composed of stained fruitwoods and boxwood, while decorative trim often incorporated cast brass or gilt bronze ormolu mounts.

Authentic period pieces show signs of hand-construction, including hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original cast brass fittings, and natural shrinkage cracks or patination in the timber. The underside and backboards generally display rough-sawn timber rather than modern processed boards.

Position the cabinet against a neutral or dark backdrop to emphasize the warm grain and marquetry details. Complement the piece by placing contemporary artwork or modern ceramic vessels on the top surface, balancing period craftsmanship with clean modern elements.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood veneer from drying, fading, or lifting. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding aerosol sprays and water.
