This Regency style sideboard belongs to the nineteenth century, dating around 1820. Constructed from mahogany with a warm brown colour, the piece has a bow-front shape with geometric string inlay, decorative mouldings, central drawers flanked by cupboards, and ring turned legs with brass ring pulls. The visible details include key escutcheons on the drawers and cupboard doors, brass drop handles, and fine linear stringing outlining the drawer fronts and cupboard panels. Measuring 89 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, the sideboard provides a compact yet practical surface for display and storage. Positioned in a dining room, hallway, or living area, this item serves as a functional serving surface or storage console. The proportions suit various interior layouts, while the warm mahogany tone and traditional aesthetic complement traditional and transitional spaces alike. The low profile keeps walkways clear while offering surface space and enclosed storage for tableware, linens, or household items.

FAQs

A Regency bow-front sideboard is defined by its smooth convex curved front, constructed to optimise dining room space while displaying balanced proportions. These pieces typically feature flame mahogany veneers, delicate line inlay, brass handles, and straight tapered or turned legs.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers laid over secondary timbers such as pine or oak. Decorative accents often incorporated satinwood or boxwood stringing, along with brass keyhole escutcheons and cast brass ring or oval backplate handles.

Authentic period sideboards display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, unevenness in hand-sawn back panels, and natural oxidisation on the timber. Original drawer bottoms usually show shrinkage gaps consistent with aged wood, alongside historical cast-brass fittings.

Position the sideboard as a focal point against a neutral or boldly painted wall to highlight the timber grain. Balance the surface with contemporary ceramics, minimalist table lamps, or framed artwork suspended directly above the piece.

Maintain the mahogany finish by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing in the direction of the grain, while avoiding modern spray polishes containing silicone or harsh solvents.
