Regency Rosewood Chiffonier with Gothic Panelled Doors, Circa 1820

19th century
Description

A fine Regency rosewood chiffonier, dating to circa 1820, displaying particularly attractive figuring and a rich, warm colour throughout.

The rectangular top sits above a single frieze drawer, fitted with lion mask and ring handles, over a pair of panelled cupboard doors. Each door is decorated with a distinctive Gothic pointed-arch panel, flanked by turned rosewood columns.

The doors open to reveal a useful shelved interior, while the whole stands on a substantial plinth base with projecting block feet.

The drawer is traditionally constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, consistent with the early 19th-century date.

A handsome and relatively restrained Regency chiffonier, the beautifully figured rosewood providing much of its decoration. Its compact proportions make it a particularly versatile piece for a drawing room, dining room, hallway or alcove.

English, circa 1820.

This Regency period chiffonier is a 19th-century piece originating from England around 1820. Constructed from rosewood with a dark brown, flame-veneered finish, the cabinet exhibits warm figuring throughout its surfaces. The rectangular top rests above a single frieze drawer fitted with twin brass lion-mask ring handles, positioned over a pair of lower cupboard doors. Each door displays a distinctive Gothic pointed-arch panel and is flanked by turned columns, while the entire structure stands upon a substantial plinth base with projecting block feet. The piece measures 97 cm high, 97 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Compact proportions allow this cabinet to function as a versatile addition to a drawing room, dining room, hallway, or alcove. Interior shelving provides practical storage space behind the panelled doors, making the chiffonier suitable for everyday organisation in a home setting today. The clean lines and architectural detailing integrate smoothly into traditional or classic interior schemes while maintaining functional storage utility.

FAQs

A Regency chiffonier is a low sideboard or storage cabinet that emerged in early 19th-century Britain. Designed for drawing rooms and dining areas, it typically features a double-door cupboard base accompanied by an upper drawer or raised shelf.

Regency cabinetmakers favoured dark, exotic timbers such as rosewood, mahogany, and zebrawood, highlighted by prominent natural graining and cast brass fittings. Interiors frequently featured solid oak or pine drawer linings with hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic Regency pieces from the 18101830 period exhibit period details such as Gothic arch panels, turned architectural columns, flame veneers, and cast brass handles. Evidence of hand-sawn construction and age-appropriate timber shrinkage also confirms period origin.

A rosewood chiffonier serves as a functional side cabinet in contemporary living rooms, dining spaces, or hallways. Placing linear modern lighting or structural ceramic art on top provides a balanced contrast against the dark timber and classical detailing.

Position rosewood furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent veneer movement and colour loss. Dust regularly with a clean lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the grain twice a year.
