Description

Large Superb Antique Portrait Oil Painting After Sir Joshua Reynolds (1724–1781)

Brief Description:

This is a magnificent original oil on canvas portrait depicting the distinguished British politician and celebrated brewer Henry Thrale (1724–1781).

Painted in 1968 as a faithful recreation of the celebrated 1777 portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, this impressive work captures the dignity and character of one of Georgian Britain's most influential figures. Reynolds' original masterpiece is now housed in one of the world's leading museum collections, making this finely executed period copy an exceptional decorative and historical piece in its own right.

The portrait is beautifully presented in an outstanding quality, richly hand-carved giltwood frame, complete with its original gilt presentation plaque, adding greatly to its authenticity and display appeal.

Henry Thrale was one of the most prominent figures of 18th-century London. A successful brewer and businessman, he inherited the renowned H. Thrale & Co. Brewery from his father, Ralph Thrale, transforming it into one of the capital's foremost brewing enterprises. Beyond his commercial success, Thrale served as a Member of Parliament for Southwark from 1765 to 1780, while also holding the prestigious civic offices of Alderman and Sheriff of the City of London.

Thrale is perhaps equally remembered for his close friendship with the celebrated writer Samuel Johnson, who became a frequent guest at the Thrales' home and formed a lifelong bond with Henry and his wife, Hester Lynch Thrale (later Piozzi). Their home became one of the great intellectual and literary salons of Georgian England, welcoming many of the era's foremost thinkers and writers.

Born at the Alehouse in Harrow Corner, Southwark, Henry Thrale married Hester Lynch Salusbury in 1763, and together they had twelve children. Contemporary accounts describe him as a respected and deeply religious gentleman, an enthusiastic sportsman and keen huntsman, whose fondness for gambling reflected the fashionable pursuits of the Georgian aristocracy.

This is a wonderfully decorative portrait of an important historical figure, combining excellent craftsmanship with distinguished provenance and timeless Georgian elegance.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

18th-century British portraiture, popularised by artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds, focuses on grand manner compositions, classical posture, and rich tonal palettes to convey social status and character.

Reproduction oil portraits were typically painted using oil pigments on stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within ornate wood or composition moulding frames finished with gold leaf.

Authentic period oil paintings exhibit natural craquelure across the paint surface, age-appropriate stretcher wear, historic canvas backing, and cast or carved gilt frame moulding.

A traditional portrait can be styled as a focal artwork above a mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing effectively with dark academia library aesthetics or minimalist contemporary spaces.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight and severe humidity fluctuations, dust gently using a soft dry brush, and consult a professional art conservator for surface cleaning.
