Fine Late Georgian / Early Regency Portrait of a Gentleman

19th century
Description

An exceptionally handsome and finely executed late 18th / early 19th century original oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, dating to circa 1800.

Unsigned but painted with remarkable skill, the portrait captures a striking, aristocratic sitter possessing an intense, romantic 'Byronic' gaze. The artist's ability is particularly evident in the luminous handling of the flesh tones and the superb, crisp definition of the intricate white lace cravat cascading over a rich cream and gold waistcoat. The deep navy or black coat is adorned with a series of highly distinct, custom gilded brass or gold-plated scallop shell buttons - a luxury detail that points to a gentleman of significant social standing and means.

Condition:

The painting has recently undergone a sensitive surface clean. This professional revival has beautifully restored the painting's vibrant colour palette and depth, leaving it in excellent, stable condition and entirely ready to hang. The canvas shows a fine, stable craquelure consistent with its 225-year age.

Provenance:

The reverse of the frame retains a fascinating and multi-layered physical history of elite West London custody. It bears an authentic, old label for Pike's Chelsea Depositories, alongisde a secondary vintage storage tag from the prestigious John Barker & Co Ltd Depository in Kensington. This indicates the painting has belonged to prominent family collections throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Presented in a later giltwood frame that perfectly compliments the Regency aesthetic.

Dimensions:

Canvas: 62 cm x 54 cm

Framed: 71 cm x 64 cm

Date: Circa 1800

Origin: English School

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Portraits from this era, spanning roughly 1790 to 1820, typically feature refined formal attire, naturalistic skin tones, and subtle lighting contrast, reflecting the aesthetic transitions between Neoclassicism and Romanticism.

Artists utilised hand-mixed oil pigments on linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden frames, often presented in carved gilded wooden frames decorated with classic moulding details.

Authentic pieces display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, historic stretching marks along the canvas margins, and signs of period framing methods such as hand-cut wooden stretchers.

Position the portrait as a focal point above a mantelpiece or console table to add historic depth, contrasting classical portraiture with contemporary, clean-lined furnishings.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity, dusting the frame lightly with a soft brush rather than liquid cleaners.
