Description

I love the back as much as the front on this charming little 'chanteh' (vanity-bag) made by Qashqa'i tribes in Fars province, south-west Persia circa 1920s.

Diagonal bands of beautiful colours dominate the front, knotted-pile face of this chanteh with the main border, comprising small diamonds, possibly symbolising 'eyes' for protection, and running for approx 3cm up the back of the bag, for resilience. The back, in interlocking plain-weave, consists of a single blue triple-diamond, again, possibly representing an 'eye'! The bag is complete with lovely, glossy wool.

A Qashqai vanity bag, traditionally referred to as a shanteh, is a small handwoven pouch crafted by the nomadic Qashqai tribes of the Fars Province in South-West Persia. These compact woven containers were designed to hold personal effects, mirror sets, and cosmetics during tribal migrations.

These textiles are woven using hand-spun wool spun from local sheep, dyed with natural vegetable and plant dyes. Construction typically combines asymmetrical hand-knotted wool pile with flatweave techniques, finished with braided selvedges along the edges.
